Here We Go! Let’s Get Ready to Harvest and Clean Some Seeds!

Summer is here and seeds are drying all around us. While these manzanita (aka Arctostaphylos sp.) berries are not ripe until later in the year, they still set the stage for what many of us seed keepers and sowers are always thinking about—harvest!!! (These were harvested for Cistus Nursery where I work part-time. I grind off the dry outer “flesh” of the berries and sift it off. What’s left are seeds! This is not an easy plant to germinate though and special treatment is required.)

Spiffy Seeds will showcase seeds that we want to sell because we find them interesting or ornamental in some way. Spiffy Seeds is not your usual seed boutique and we’re not curating based on anything other than our own professional horticultural and botanical experience and knowledge.

With that in mind, please enjoy the unique experience of shopping through some classics and oddities… Just be sure to check the mastery level before you purchase: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, expert. Some seeds are easier to germinate than others, and sometimes you might just want to seek out a fully-grown plant start instead of seeds in order to save the time and headache of not succeeding with difficult seeds. Starting plants from seeds absolutely does NOT always save you money, but it is worth the fun of trying!!!

Onward!!!
