The is the commonly grown millet grass that is endemic to Illinois and which can grow in the shade. It is an amazing addition to that gloomy area you'd like to get something for that will really POP.
In our climate out here in the NW is is practically an evergreen grass but it does get a bit mushy in the winter depending upon whether or not we have any snow. Our plant is planted in the dry shade of a Doug fir and it works really well.
The only setback we have is that my cats find it delicious.
